Ophthorobotics was represented at the prestigious Club Jules Gonin in Lugano, one of the most selective gatherings in surgical retina worldwide.

Prof. Stephan Michels, co-founder of Ophthorobotics, presented the poster "Autonomous Robotic System for Safe, Precise, and Scalable Intravitreal Injections" — a collaboration between Augenklinik Zürich West and the Multiscale Robotics Lab (MSRL) at ETH Zurich.

The system features:

  • Infrared eye tracker fused with needle tracking (<1 ms latency)
  • 3-DoF positioning platform achieving ≤50 µm tip accuracy
  • Reflexive safe retraction during unexpected saccades (~700°/s)
  • Closed-loop force control via a 6-axis force/torque sensor

The result: autonomous intravitreal injection that is safe, reproducible, and surpasses expert clinician precision — paving the way for scalable, lower-cost retinal care.

With millions of IVI procedures performed globally each year, autonomous robotics has the potential to fundamentally reshape access, throughput, and cost efficiency in the treatment of retinal diseases.
